Today we're spending Seven Questions In Heaven with Novelette's Cara Salimando.
Describe your music for our readers who may not be familiar with you.
Like being in a swirling blue dreamworld, sometimes there's darkness, but the clouds part for sweetness too.
Who are your musical influences and idols?
Fiona Apple, Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes), Lana Del Rey, Land Of Talk, Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), and Annie Clark (St. Vincent).
What was the first album, cassette, or CD you bought with your own money?
Tidal by Fiona Apple.
What was the strangest gig you've ever played?
Once I opened for Big Time Rush (Nickelodeon boy band) at Vermont's State Fair. My band and I took an old time photo and pet some goats, played our set, then devoured carnival food in a disgusting way. It was the day after Hurricane Irene, the road was in a bad way on the way there and back, Vermont was a slice of heaven after the trip, then back to dreary Brooklyn (that I love).
What is your current favorite guilty pleasure?
I love horrible TV. I only watch television that resembles things you'd see at circus sideshows. TLC is great for that; My 600-Pound Life, Hoarders, I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant, and Lifetime Network movies are all I watch. I like to think myself fairly intelligent, well-read and all that, but I can't say no to the weird TV vortex I'm in lately.
If they named an ice cream flavor after you, what would be the name and why?
Caramarshmellow. Marshmallows, caramel, sea salt, and vanilla please. I'm a tiny white girl who is somewhat bitter and sweet at times, seems like me.
Final question: You're the opening act of a music festival. You can get any five artists, living or dead, to perform on the bill with you. Which five do you choose and what song do you all perform as the final jam?
Oh man. Broken Social Scene, Margot & The Nuclear So And So's, The Postal Service, St. Vincent, and Conor Oberst. We'd do a weird rendition of Johnny Cash's "It Ain't Me, Babe," my favorite singalong.
